KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has decided to hire from within and offer the post of county counsel to one of the lawyers they hired to be on their legal team.
If negotiations are successful, Lewis Smith will be responsible for handling the board’s legal matters, making sure they follow the law, handling lawsuits and providing legal opinions.
The county has had problems hanging on to lawyers lately and they decided to create a three-person legal department, to provide more continuity. Smith was initially hired to be on the team two months ago. They apparently liked the work he has been doing and decided to make him team captain.
Smith was on hand for the vote.
His appointment won’t be official until they negotiate a contract.
For that and other labor issues, they will hire outside counsel.
