PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Portage has been given a grant of $112,200 from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity to buy 38 sets of PFAS-free firefighter turnout gear.
The Firefighter Turnout Gear program is designed to help fire departments get an additional set of gear and ensure that firefighters have the most advanced and safest equipment available.
Portage will be among the first fire departments to have PFAS-free gear. PFAS are known as forever chemicals that can pose health risks to firefighters as they can leech out of gear that is wet.
The state is awarding $15 million total to 187 fire and safety agencies in Michigan to equip full-time career firefighters with the latest personal protective equipment.
