KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The latest effort by the city of Kalamazoo to reduce the odors coming from Graphic Packaging International and the wastewater plant has run into a million-dollar problem.
Utilities director James Baker says the groundwater where the new line will go is contaminated by unacceptable levels of mercury and PFAS, and they will need special equipment to pump it out and treat it.
Baker says once the line is replaced, it will seal an area that had been leaking hydrogen sulfide into the community.
Commissioner Chris Praedel says it’s a commitment they made.
City commissioners have already approved the cost of the portable filtration system, boosting it from a $2.9-million project to $3.9-million.
