KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Some Kalamazoo County commissioners say they have to do a better job of spending money, because they have too much cash.
It will be a topic for discussion when they meet in a special session Tuesday for their annual budget retreat.
Their last audit revealed they had nearly $13-million left over at the end of 2023, and vice chair John Taylor says they are heading for another big surplus at the end of this year.
He says that money should be helping residents and solving problems.
He says that money is on top of their rainy day fund, which is already twice as big as it should be.
Republicans Jeff Heppler and John Gisler agree with Taylor.
It was Democrat Monteze Morales who urged caution in how it’s spent.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says the retreat is being held to set their priorities as staff begins putting together the budget proposal for 2025.
The retreat is set to begin at 5 p.m. at the County Administration building, and will be open to the public.
