GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 26, 2024) – If at first you don’t succeed, you try and try again.
That’s old axiom applies to Jim Dreyer, the soon-to-be 61-year-old Grand Haven ultra-marathon swimmer who failed twice last year to swim across Lake Michigan on the 25th anniversary of his initial solo effort. The two attempts from Milwaukee to Grand Haven were stymied by conditions beyond his control.
On August 6th, Dreyer will go into the waters of Lake Michigan off of McKinley Beach in Milwaukee and try for a third time to swim across to City Beach in Grand Haven, a distance of nearly 83 miles.
He will go alone, towing an inflatable dingy filled with 225 pounds of supplies, in what he figures to be over 72 hours of continuous swimming without sleep. It’s a fundraising effort for the US Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association.
