PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The cleanup work continues in Portage following the May 7th tornado. While it may take years to fully recover, City Manager Pat McGinnis says the city moved quickly to do its part.
McGinnis says they were able to respond immediately because of their rainy-day fund, which is money they bank for emergencies like this.
McGinnis says so far they have spent about a million dollars on their part of the clean-up. They have already received $250,000 from Kalamazoo County, and are awaiting word from the state for reimbursement.
He says Public Works director Ronnie Russell reported the largest expense has been removing all the downed trees and brush dragged to the curbside.
He says the spreadsheet for the cleanup has been posted on-line accounting for everything from private contractors to wood chippers to donuts for firemen.
