PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The death of a bicyclist in Portage last week has prompted the city to do a new safety study at the scene of the crash.
Kira Griggs came forward last night to say Centre Avenue near Brookwood Drive is impossible to cross and asked for the study to justify installing a traffic signal.
City Manager Pat McGinnis, who lives near there, says he is aware of the danger and says they were already working on adding a sidewalk on the south side of Centre.
Mayor Patricia Randall says a traffic study will be done.
But council member Terry Urban says there is no guarantee the study will result in the installation of a traffic signal.
He has been through this frustrating process before, which involves meeting state requirements.
Last week’s victim was pronounced dead at the scene soon after he was struck by an elderly woman in an SUV. Council member Jihan Young identified the victim as 20-year-old Brendan Sheppard.
McGinnis says the last traffic study done along that stretch of Centre was completed in 2017, but traffic counts have climbed since then, and with more construction planned in the area, it will likely get busier.
When the traffic study is done, they will post it on the city’s website.
