KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo already has an aggressive program for planting trees along city streets and a $1-million grant is about to expand that.
The money, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, calls for removing 400 hazardous trees over the next four years from disadvantaged neighborhoods, replacing them and planting an additional 175 trees each year.
Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess commented.
Commissioner Chris Preadel says that’s 900 new trees.
Kalamazoo already has a plan that’s been in place since 2021, identifying locations where trees are needed, and what specific native species are appropriate for planting in the right of way.
The tree replacement program is part of a much larger city effort to make the community more environmentally sustainable and carbon neutral.
