KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Roads aren’t just an issue in the city of Kalamazoo.
Long-simmering differences between the Kalamazoo County board and the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County have resurfaced.
They may have more to do with personalities than pavement.
Some county board members still feel that the agency, which oversees roads in the townships, isn’t responsive enough to constituents. But others strongly disagree.
Talks between the leaders of both boards have failed to generate the kind of partnership that board chair Tami Rae would like to see, but she isn’t ready to dissolve the board and assume control of the group.
Rae blames managing director Joanna Johnson for the problems.
Vice chair John Taylor says he sees no viable options, rejecting the idea of a county board takeover of the operation.
Commissioner Jen Strebs renewed her call for an outside consultant to present options for a transition.
But most commissioners have been opposed to any changes.
That was Jeff Heppler and John Gisler, who represent rural districts.
Rae directed County Administrator Kevin Catlin to reopen dialog with the leadership of the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County board to try to settle their differences again.
