KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A plan to restructure parking in downtown Kalamazoo has been delayed after public opposition surfaced.
With all the construction chaos, residents called this the wrong time to raise rates and extend the hours for meters.
The majority on the commission agreed, saying they liked some parts of the staff proposal, but not others.
Commissioner Qianna Decker put it plainly.
But City Planner Christina Anderson says downtown merchants like the plan because it keeps people from hogging parking spaces in front of their shops.
City Manager Jim Ritsema says the longer they wait to find new sources of revenue,
The more money the parking system loses.
With the staff proposal facing certain defeat, it was proposed that they revise the plan and bring it back on August 12th.
Commissioners agreed that a new system of charging fees for overnight parking on downtown streets for residents was a good idea, and for parking kiosks on the Kalamazoo Mall but not the rest of the plan.
