KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Plans for changes in downtown parking, including higher rates and the end of free parking on the downtown mall, will be up for approval tonight.
It’s part of a larger effort to restore balance to parking finances, which took a big hit because of the pandemic and have yet to recover.
City planner Christina Anderson says it will also set up a permit system for overnight parking, with fees on downtown streets, and will extend parking meter hours.
Anderson says they will set up kiosks on the mall, where shoppers can pay for parking, which will be set at variable rates depending on the time of day.
Kalamazoo city commissioners received a full briefing on the proposal two weeks ago and will take public comment before voting on the proposal this evening.
Anderson says the changes would be phased in as new equipment and systems are installed and set up.
