COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a public meeting last night to gather input on the possibility of reopening the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township.
NRC spokesman Scott Burnell says they are at the beginning of the work to decide if the plant can be safely restarted after it shut down in 2022.
Owner Holtec International has been filing requests for licensing to get the plant running again, but there are people who are opposed to it.
Among them is Jaclyn Haulst of Allegan County, who says she is not convinced nuclear power is clean energy and says utilities need to do better with the infrastructure like power lines that are at risk of failing due to weather.
