ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) – The search continues for whoever is behind an apparent scam targeting Allegan County residents.
In a statement on Monday, July 8, Clerk and Register of Deeds Bob Genetski cautions that a caller from an 866 area code, claiming to be “Chris” from the clerk’s office, is asking targets to input extension 1088 in order to receive some “time sensitive” documents from the office. This caller, who either has a foreign accent or may be an artificial intelligence-generated voice, would also ask to make arrangements to collect a signature for these documents.
Genetski, who received notification of these calls via social media messaging on Saturday, including a recording of the call itself, said that his office has no person named “Chris.” Most of the communication from his office come via the US Mail, with customers anticipating such documents, and any calls from his office is from the 269 area code.
The clerk, who has forwarded all the information he has received to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department for further investigation, added that an online search of the phone number the purported scammer is calling from has had a history of reported scamming attempts related to it, stemming back to 2021. He warns residents to not respond to this caller’s attempts for information, hang up, and to notify authorities of such a call.
