KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One of two affordable housing projects that sparked citizen opposition in Portage last year will be moving forward soon.
The development between Woodbine and Stanley will be called Stanwood Crossings, if approved. It’s being partially subsidized by several public sources including the County Housing Millage.
The original plan was for 78 units – 44 townhouses and 34-single family homes. County housing director Mary Balkema says the revised plan cuts that considerably.
They are considered “workforce housing,” valued at around $300,000 each, for residents who earn 80 to 120% of the average median income.
The proposal will soon go to the Portage planning commission, where the public will get another chance to give their input.
Balkema expects the homes will sell quickly, if approved.
She says they met with existing homeowners last week and they asked that more trees be added to the 14-acre development, and the developer agreed to include them.
More information on the proposal is available at the Portage city website here:
