KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo Public Safety lieutenant who sued, claiming the department was a hostile and racist work environment, has apparently accepted a settlement.
Lakisha McMillon claimed that her health was affected by racial and sexual slurs, harassment and that she suffered retaliation for reporting it to superiors.
The lawsuit has been working its way through the courts and settlement talks for the last five years, city commissioners approved an offer a month ago, and after a closed session last night, city attorney Aaron Leal asked the commission for action on the deal.
The motion was approved unanimously.
The city claimed that because McMillon had never been demoted or fired, in fact she had been promoted, she had no cause for action.
