KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo is expected to begin breaking up concrete today on the most expensive road project in its history.
Work commences today on Michikal, as the city begins eliminating its network of one-way streets downtown.
Public Works director James Baker says this one-way street will be converted to two-way, linking Michigan and Kalamazoo avenues on the west end of the downtown.
Baker says phase one this year will repave the western lanes. Phase two next year will pave the east lane and make other improvements.
Phase one of the project will be completed by early November, if all goes as planned.
It may be the most expensive, but it won’t be Kalamazoo’s most ambitious road project
That was the Gruen Plan back in the 1950s that created the one-way network in the first place, including the Kalamazoo Mall.
