TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There has been a lot of turnover at the top in Kalamazoo County government in the past few years, and the county board held the second of a pair of sessions with a facilitator last night to close some of the gaps.
Not only has there been change in the administration, but in the board itself. The strategic planning session addressed such issues as personality dynamics, a lack of shared vision, an overload of committee assignments and low awareness of the county services they oversee, and an imbalance in the way senior services are delivered.
Board chair Tami Rae says it was a chance to meet with many members of the staff she had not met before.
She says it isn’t a major problem.
Unlike other local governments, the county is split up into many smaller quasi-independent operations.
Administrator Kevin Catlin says the aim is to get everyone traveling in the same direction.
Several of them have said that they rarely get together with department heads and other elected officials, like the courts, the sheriff and other department heads to talk.
Their first session with the facilitator was held last month in Comstock Township. Last night’s second session was held in Texas Township.
It stands in stark contrast to the way government officials have been getting along in Lansing and Washington.
