KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Many of the world’s leaders are gathering on the coast of France today to commemorate a pivotal day in history, the 80th anniversary of the World War 2 battle that eventually led to the defeat of Nazism in Europe.
160,000 Allied soldiers participated in the D-Day invasion, over 44 hundred of them dying on the beaches of Normandy.
Kalamazoo County commissioner Dale Deleeuw notes that it may also be the last big celebration of the event that the remaining participants get to experience firsthand.
Many more would die in the next three months it took to liberate France and the year it took to take Berlin.
Historians say it important to remember the lessons from such costly events in history, to avoid ever having to experience them again.
