KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County will be sending more money to areas hit by last month’s tornado, this time to clean up damage in county drains that could flood if another storm hits.
Commissioners approved spending all their remaining ARPA funds, $134,000, to remove downed trees and other debris from six county drains hit by the tornado.
County Drain Commissioner Jason Wiersma says they are still assessing the damage, finding it difficult to access some tornado ravaged areas, particularly the drain near Colony Woods.
Joanne O’Rourke, president of the hard-hit Colony Woods neighborhood in Texas Township, says removal of debris from thousands of trees from front yards is finally underway.
She says some homeowners have the resources needed some do not, and many are squabbling with insurance adjustors over repair costs and what they are willing to cover.
It’s been four weeks since the tornado ripped through the southern metro area.
Stormy weather is forecast to hit the area again later today.
