KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As expected, Kalamazoo city commissioners have given their stamp of approval to a $12-million federal roads grant to turn Michigan and Kalamazoo avenues back into two-way streets.
Not everyone agrees.
Commissioner Don Cooney is keeping up his drumbeat that the community has bigger problems, escalating water bills, skyrocketing rental rates, gun violence.
He voted against a separate measure for more planning dollars to update the design of the Kalamazoo Avenue conversion.
While other commissioners expressed their sympathy for Cooney’s position, commissioner Chris Praedel pointed out that these funds are coming from state gas taxes.
It was suggested by Praedel that the city hire more grant writers to seek funds for poverty programs as well, a proposal that Cooney could agree with.
