PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – More gaps have begun to show in the relief effort to help the victims of the tornado that struck Portage.
A displaced renter came forward to the Portage city council to say they are not quite poor enough to qualify for assistance, not well off enough to find a place to live in a housing crisis.
Violet Wagner says the Red Cross shelter is set to close today.
She has been calling all over for help, and now Memorial Day has passed and no help has arrived.
She pleaded with the city council to help.
Mayor Patricia Randall says it’s apparent they have more work to do.
City Manager Pat McGinnis says his staff has been working every day since the tornado to address problems and will now tackle this challenge too.
Several council members have asked for patience because they and city staff are dealing with the kind of natural disaster they have not seen before.
