PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage City Council has changed their rules for yard signs as we approach the big November election.
It has always been a violation to put campaign signs in the public right of way, and that includes temporary commercial signs as well, but until now the ordinance had no teeth.
City Manager Pat McGinnis says one time violators will get a warning.
City Attorney Catherine Kaufman says their aim is to curb the repeat offenders.
City Councilman Chris Burns says he welcomes the new rules.
Another proposed change could expand the time signs can be posted to 45 days before the election, instead of the current 30, because of the new early voting rules.
That ordinance revision is still being reviewed.
