BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – It was a busy Sunday for the Battle Creek Fire Department as they had to battle two fires.
The first was reported at 2:36 a.m. in a occupied duplex at 9 South Place. Fire crews were greeted by heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of the structure when they arrived.
No civilians were injured but a firefighter suffered a minor back injury and was treated at the scene by Lifecare Ambulance. A cat died in the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages were estimated at about $190,000.
The second Sunday fire was reported at 11:19 a.m. in a multi family duplex at 679 Capital Avenue NE.
Battle Creek Fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the front and side of the home when they arrived. A woman was found in the back of the burning building.
The woman was taken to the front of the building where she was given oxygen.
One other person was removed from the fire through a window by neighbors before fire crews arrived.
Both victims were transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital by LifeCare Ambulance and were treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire crews remained on scene to perform fire control, and then salvage and overhaul. No firefighters were injured.
There were previous reports of the home exploding but it is believed that the two explosions heard were medical oxygen tanks rupturing. Damages were estimated at about $146,000.
The fire is under investigation by the Battle Creek Fire Department.
