PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One of the least expensive items on the Portage city budget got the most discussion yesterday at their work session.
Each year, the council sets aside just over $211,000 to help local non-profits in the city of Portage, and the mayor pro-tem was disappointed to see that two of them did not make the cut this year.
Jim Pearson says Lending Hand, which refurbishes and lends out medical equipment, and Twelve Baskets, which operates a food bank for the poor were excluded because they didn’t meet city criteria.
He recommended that the City Manager give them $5,000 each anyway.
Mayor Patricia Randall went a step further, proposing they also find a way to make them compliant.
Council Member Jihan Ain Young disagreed, saying this is a bad precedent.
In the end, most supported the funding for the non-profits, but not before an extended debate.
