LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A new study from the Michigan Department of Corrections says less inmates released from prison are heading back again.
The study of over 6,000 inmates who left prison in 2020 found 22.7 percent committed new crimes, which is the second lowest ever in the state.
The all-time low was set the previous year at 22.1 percent. The rates have been studied every year since 1998.
MDOC offender success administrator Kyle Kaminski says it is a testament to the creativity and drive of the department over the last several years to refine approaches and help people avoid going back to prison after being released.
