KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Nearly two months since Kalamazoo County lost its corporate council, hiring a replacement has become a problem.
Administrator Kevin Catlin informed the county board that they began a regional search for candidates in February.
Former county attorney Angelina Barnes got a better offer.
Catlin says they will probably have to hire an executive search firm to look nationally, and hope they can find a candidate with some experience here in Michigan.
This kind of law is a specialty, and it takes expertise in Michigan law as it applies to local government to practice here effectively.
In the meantime, he says they may go ahead and hire at least one lawyer with less experience, who can handle routine matters in the meantime.
Right now they are paying outside attorneys’ for legal services, which can be very expensive.
