BENTON HARBOR, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The future of the Palisades Power Plant site in Van Buren County’s Covert Township will be discussed Wednesday evening.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a meeting from 6:00-8:15 p.m. at the Grand Upton Hall on the Lake Michigan College campus, 2755 East Napier Avenue, Benton Harbor to discuss a planned restart of the nuclear facility by Holtec.
The company, which initially took over the property two years ago from Entergy to decommission the plant, looks to restart it on a smaller basis, and has secured a $1.5 billion loan from the United States Department of Energy to do just that.
This meeting, which will also be streamed with virtual participation, will go over many aspects of Holtec’s license application. Local and state officials are looking forward to the resumption of electric generating power from the plant, while opponents fear Holtec’s inexperience in plant operations and other issues stemming from the closed facility could trigger an environmental catastrophe.
