DETTOIT, MI — General Motors says it is planning to vacate its longtime world headquarters in Detroit.
The automaker is going to move to the Hudson’s Detroit development that is underway by Dan Gilbert. The $1.4 billion Hudson’s site is expected to be finished by the end of 2024 and will offer office, retail, restaurant, hotel and residential living in a 45-story tower and 12-story office building in downtown Detroit. GM says it plans to move for the new digs in 2025.
GM will become the development’s anchor tenant. The car company will occupy the top office floors of the redeveloped building, plus a first-floor vehicle showcasing space. It has signed a 15 year lease.
The move leaves the future of the RenCen in doubt. The automaker will collaborate with the city of Detroit and Wayne County to redevelop the RenCen — a 5.5-million-square-foot complex of seven buildings with hotel, restaurant and office space. GM owns the site.
