PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan State Police are issuing a warning to people to watch their bank account activity closely. That is due to members falling victim at an alarming rate by clicking on spoofed text messages that claim to be from their bank or credit union.
Clicking on those will send someone to a website that looks like their bank or credit union’s site, but is not. They then unknowingly input their username, password, and answer security questions and give scammers access to their account.
People have been victimized by having money wired from their account through member-to-member wire transfers.
MSP says anyone who gets a text message that appears to be from their financial institution should not respond or click on any links. Instead, they are urged to contact the bank or credit union directly if there are questions about the text message or any possible fraudulent activity on their account.
If someone is a victim, they are being told to immediately notify the financial institution and file a police report.
