PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is planning what they call a prescribed burn Tuesday, April 9 in the Gourdneck Prairie in the southwest portion of the City of Portage.
Prescribed burns are fires carefully lit and monitored by trained professionals. The burns help regenerate forests, control invasive species, create wildlife habitat, and promote healthy forests.
DNR officials say they also remove underbrush that, left unchecked, could provide fuels for bigger wildfires.
