BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – No injuries were reported but three apartments were damaged Saturday night when a fire broke out at 111 West Street.
An electrical short is being listed as the cause of the fire which was reported at about 10:20 p.m..
There was a light haze of smoke inside the hallway of the apartment building when firefighters arrived.
They determined the fire was coming from a vent fan in an apartment on the first floor. Crews had to pull drywall from the ceiling to gain access to extinguish the fire.
The fire got into the second floor where a sprinkler was activated.
Once the fire was exposed, crews were able to quickly gain control.
Water had to be shut off to the building until maintenance could fix a broken sprinkler.
The American Red Cross was contacted to help residents who could not stay in their apartments.
