CENTREVILLE, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman says a 25-year-old Sturgis man who was a suspect in the March 20 sexual assault of two girls under the age of 13 during a home invasion has been apprehended in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The man was wanted in connection to what happened at the Sweet Lake Mobile Home Park near Sturgis.
The investigation led the Sheriff’s Office to a person of interest but while they were waiting to take him into custody for questioning, he fled the area.
They were able to track him to Fort Wayne. With the assistance of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, they initiated a continuous surveillance operation in the area where the suspect was believed to be.
This surveillance operation led to the capture of the suspect who is charged with First Degree Home Invasion and two counts of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
He is being held on an Immigration Detainer.
Bingaman stated in a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, “Thanks to the meticulous planning, execution, and collaboration between multiple law enforcement partners, a dangerous predator is in custody.”
Numerous law enforcement agencies assisted including Sturgis Police, Fort Wayne
Police, St. Joseph County Central Dispatch, Indiana State Police, Michigan State Police, Indianapolis Metro Police and their Violent Crime Task Force Team, TSA,
ICE, FBI, Homeland Security and Chucks Towing.
