PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Metro Transit’s new Uber-like pilot service begins in a couple of weeks, at least in part of the metro area, and some would already like to see it expanded.
The planned system will primarily provide rides that would be summoned like an Uber or a Lyft to the nearest metro bus stop, for those in areas where housing is more spread out and a bus stop may be some distance away.
Portage city councilman Terry Urban was disappointed to see that it didn’t cover all of Portage, even though everyone in that city pays the Metro Transit millage.
Mayor Pro Tempore Jim Pearson, who sits on the Metro Transit board, says he agrees, but says this is just a pilot and that is still a possibility.
Metro Transit Director Sean McBride says expansion depends on how the pilot service is accepted and used.
When the new service starts on the 15th, it will be limited to three districts in the metro area, the east Kalamazoo/Comstock area, the Oshtemo/West Kalamazoo area and southern Portage.
