KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was kept busy with a pair of fires ovet the holiday weekend.
Friday night around 11:00 p.m. KDPS was dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire in the 1600 block of Glendale Blvd. Officers arrived to find fire in the kitchen of the home and all the residents evacuated.
They say a quick interior attack had the fire out in just over ten minutes, however the home suffered substantial smoke damage and was not inhabitable. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family.
Then Saturday around 11:45 p.m. crews were dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire in the 1900 block of Waite Avenue. The resident called KDPS after hearing a crackling sound in the wall.
A fire stemming from the fireplace was located between the first and second floors, forcing firefighters to conducted aggressive overhaul to expose the fire and keep it from spreading.
Public Safety was able to put the out in around 20 minutes but remained on scene for some time to ensure there was no additional fire spread.
One of the City of Kalamazoo Fire Marshals was brought on scene to investigate the fire.
