KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Drivers in Kalamazoo have been seeing a lot more red lately than green and there is a reason for that. The streets have seen a lot of changes, and now the timing is off.
A new contract with a Michigan consulting firm has just been approved to figure out how to fix that.
Kalamazoo Public Services director Jim Baker says everyone has probably experienced delays.
Baker says they have 41 traffic lights that have to sync up with each other directly and often laterally, handling different traffic volumes at different times of the day, and leave enough time for pedestrians to safely cross the street.
The $205,000 contract with Hubble, Roth and Clark was approved just last week.
Baker says he doesn’t have the manpower to do that kind of specialized work inhouse.
The money is coming from a state Highway Safety Planning grant.
