KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo man who was convicted of fatally shooting another man he was meeting to sell shoes to in December 2022 has been sentence to life without parole.
Jalani Darshawn Nowling was convicted in February of 1st Degree Premeditated Murder and Felony Firearm in the death of James Douglas White Jr. December 30, 2022 on North Burdick Street, near Parsons Street.
Nowling was sentenced Monday in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court. In addition to the life without parole sentence on the murder charge, he was also received two years on the Felony Firearm charge.
Police say White was shot while in his car. He had gone to a home on Burdick Street to buy shoes from Nowling, which Nowling had arranged through Facebook. Video footage from a surveillance camera shows Nowling talking to White from a distance, trying to get White to come toward the house.
White, who was in his car in the road, starts backing his car toward Nowling, who can no longer be seen on the camera. Shots can be heard about two minutes later in two rounds. Around 10 to 20 shots were heard.
White reportedly tried to drive away after the first set of shots, but then was hit with a second round fired by Nowling. Rifle and pistol casings were found outside the home.
Nowling continued to proclaim his innocence at his sentencing hearing Monday.
