KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department and the city of Kalamazoo have lifted the “No Contact Advisory” for the Kalamazoo River.
It had been in effect since last Wednesday, March 13, between the Paterson Street bridge in the city of Kalamazoo and the D Avenue bridge in Cooper Township.
Officials say it was a precaution due to a methylene chloride spill within Pfizer’s process area on Portage Road.
City of Kalamazoo public services director James Baker says sampling results found just 50 to 60 gallons of methylene chloride entered the Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant since the spill and that is within the treatment capacity of 291 gallons daily.
Laboratory analysis showed Pfizer contained over 94% of the release of 1,057 gallons of methylene chloride. Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford said it “could have been drastically different if not for the swift action and coordination between all involved.”
