KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners bestowed special honors on one of their four legged public safety officers and there is more good news in the fight against guns and dangerous drugs.
Last night, commissioners approved a resolution honoring K-9 Sledge, who suffered knife wounds to the neck while subduing a suspect with a knife last month on West Kalamazoo Avenue.
Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess read from the resolution.
City Manager Jim Ritsema also updated the public safety department’s statistics on gun and drug seizures.
He says they have seized 124 guns resulting in 63 arrests.
He says they have also gotten a lot of drugs off the streets.
Sledge was rushed to a veterinarian’s office near Grand Rapids for emergency surgery, and was back on the job just ten days after the assault.
