KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – City of Kalamazoo officials will honor a public safety K-9 officer and his handler this evening after the service dog suffered life threatening injuries in the line of duty last month.
A 49-year-old man armed with a box cutter was threatening others and PSOs when they responded to the scene near Woodward Avenue last month. When the four-year-old Dutch Shepherd named Sledge was deployed to subdue the man, the suspect allegedly began slashing at the dog’s throat.
Kalamazoo Public Safety released a video taken by a camera mounted in the patrol car, as the dog was rushed to Byron Center for emergency surgery to repair a damaged jugular vein.
The man with the knife faces multiple felony charges. He needed treatment for dog bites following the incident.
Sledge and K-9 Handler Max Houtman will be honored for their “Bravery and Service” during this evening’s city commission meeting.
