EMMETT TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A major road construction project in Calhoun County began on Tuesday on North Wattles Road from Michigan Avenue to Verona Road.
The Calhoun County Road Department says this section of road will be “crush and shaped” with an overlay of four-and-a-half inches of Hot Mix Asphalt. Catch basins and culverts will be replaced, as well as signs along the road.
The road will be closed in a few weeks once pulverization begins.
A posted detour will run north and south on 11 Mile Rd from Michigan Avenue and Verona Road.
Construction is expected to last until about June, although these estimates are tentative due to changes in construction schedules.
According to a news release from the Road Department, the project costs over $900,000 and is funded partially by federal aid funds from the Surface Transportation Block Grant administrated by the Battle Creek Area Transportation Study which covers nearly 82% of the project costs.
The remaining 18% is covered by the Calhoun County Road Department.
The primary contractor is Lakeland Asphalt, with Hoffman Brothers assisting with grading and earthwork.
