KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A grassroots organization that aims to improve the quality of life in the City of Kalamazoo’s second largest neighborhood is hitting the reset button.
Officials with the Milwood Neighborhood Association have announced a meeting Tuesday, March 19 to elect a Board of Directors to reform the organization. They say they hope to foster a stronger sense of community and enhance the quality of life in the Milwood Neighborhood, while serving the diverse needs of neighborhood residents.
The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) meeting room at 3641 East Cork Street, Kalamazoo.
While a Board of Directors will at selected at the meeting, organizers says issues and priorities for the association will not be discussed that evening.
The Milwood Neighborhood is home to four area schools, the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport, various company headquarters such as Fabri-Kal, Schupan and Sons, Imperial Beverage, and Continental Linen Supply, as well as home Michigan Department of Transportation Southwest Michigan Regional offices, Consumers Energy Regional Operations facility, Wings Event Center, Pepsi Regional Bottling and Operations, a division of Zoetis, and Milham Park.
Situated in the southeast portion of the city, and extending southward farther than any other neighborhood, Milwood began to mature as a suburban township neighborhood in the early 1920s when farm land was sold off and platted to developers. A second housing boom developed in the post-WWII years, a time period when the neighborhood became part of the city of Kalamazoo. 58 percent of the housing stock in Milwood was built after 1950.
