KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent Darrin Slade says their efforts to improve school attendance are showing results, but they still have a long way to go.
He says beginning today, the first day of the third trimester, they plan to step it up one more notch.
He says they have seen an improvement in chronic absenteeism since they began an intensive program to boost attendance numbers earlier this school year.
He says Kalamazoo’s numbers are just a little above the state average.
He says about 450 students missed 20 or more days in the second trimester and beginning this week, their parents will be notified in no uncertain terms that they have to meet with school officials to explain why.
He says the consequences for failing to comply could mean mandatory summer school for the student or repeating a grade.
He says their ultimate goal is to get the absentee rate below 10%.
