KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The U.S. Postal Service has been trying to consolidate its offices for a couple of years now and meeting stiff resistance from local unions and communities fearful of losing their post offices.
You may have seen their ads on TV. It’s called the Delivering for America plan.
Locally the plan originally would have consolidated delivery operations from 17 area post offices to the 9th Street Distribution Center in Oshtemo. It has been actively opposed by officials at the local, state and federal level over a year, and the opposition has now succeeded.
Postal Union Vice President Kevin Trayor says the Postal Service has now altered the local plan.
He says those three branches will remain open, but only offer customers services.
Local officials had feared it might lead to the closure of rural post offices in the region.
The Postal Service hopes by consolidating carriers from 400 local distribution centers nationwide, they will be able to save $40-billion over the next decade to help erase annual deficits.
