CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says a tornado that touched down just after midnight northeast of Marshall caused significant damage to trees, powerlines, homes and barns.
The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for portions of Calhoun County at 12:02 a.m.
At about 12:35 a.m., there were visual reports of a tornado from a spotter and a law enforcement officer.
Damage in the area of L Drive North and 19 Mile Road in Lee Township was found by police and firefighters. The Calhoun County Road Department had to clear roads to allow rescue personnel access to the area and search for injured residents.
As of mid morning, no injuries have been reported.
The Sheriff’s Department says it appears the tornado moved northeast from 17 1/2 Mile Road toward 24 Mile Road in Marengo Township.
Sheriff Steve Hinkley says although roads were starting to open at mid morning, powerlines are still down along roads and in private yards.
He is urging residents to avoid the area to give Consumers Energy time to repair the damage. Most of the 2,000 customers without power were north of Marshall.
There were also reports the overnight storms produced golf ball sized hail.
