ST. JOHNS, MI — A Clinton County jury on Thursday found a man guilty for killing a deer hunter in Bath Township more than five years ago.
The jury found Thomas Olson, 35, guilty of shooting Chong Yang in the head on Nov. 16, 2018, near Rose Lake State Game Area east of Bath. Investigators alleged the Grand Blanc resident also stole Yang’s headlamp, knife, backpack and shotgun.
Yang, who lived in Lansing, was 68 years old.
Police say they tracked down Olson after a three-year investigation with witness testimony and a plastic bag with hunting spray found near the scene that contained Olson’s DNA, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. There were also several incriminating texts between Olson and another man. Police also tracked Olson’s phone to the area of the crime at the time of the shooting.
A jury found Olson guilty on Thursday of one count of second-degree murder and one count of carrying a firearm while committing a felony. He’ll be sentenced on April 8.
