KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Federal Aviation Administration hearing is set for next month on a proposed $40 million expansion project for the Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport.
Airport Director Craig Williams says the expansion would extend the length of the current 6,502 foot main runway so commercial service and business jet aircraft can operate at their maximum gross takeoff weight.
The improvements, which would be funded by a grant from the FAA, are also designed to allow planes to land in excessive heat or cold, and snowy conditions where flights currently might be delayed.
Details of the proposals before the FAA include:
Extend Runways 17 and 35 end, which runs adjacent to Aviation Drive, by 150 feet and 1,000 feet respectively
Realign Taxiway C at the approach end of Runway 17
Extend parallel Taxiway B to match Runway 17/35 extensions
Relocate an existing railroad spur owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad on the south end of the airport
Acquire avigation easements in both Runway 17 and 35’s approaches for obstruction clearing
Clearing obstructions in Runway 17 and 35’s approaches
Relocate existing airfield NAVAIDs, devices that aircraft can detect and fly to
Develop new aircraft approach and departure procedures for Runway 17/35
A FAA hearing on the proposal is scheduled for March 11, 2024.
