KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There are now at least two Democrats vying for the Michigan House of Representatives seat currently held by Kalamazoo’s Christine Morse.
Texas Township firefighter, EMT, and Kalamazoo County Commissioner Abby Wheeler has filed to run for the 40th House District. Morse announced last month that she will not be running for re-election in 2024. She plans a run for the newly created open seat in Kalamazoo County’s 9th Circuit Court
Wheeler said in a statement: “I’m running because I love this community. That’s the same reason why I became a volunteer firefighter at 16, a councilwoman at 19, and the youngest woman elected as County Commissioner in Michigan at 24, proudly representing Kalamazoo County.”
Elected to the County Commission in 2022, Wheeler previously worked as a Deputy Clerk before becoming a full-time firefighter with Texas Township.
Dr. Matt Longjohn, who ran in 2018 for the congressional seat previously held by Fred Upton, announced his run for the 40th House District seat February 2.
