LANSING, MI — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is asking for about 588 new full-time employees in the 2025 state budget, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.
Whitmer’s request follows a steady growth in state appropriations for state employees under her leadership, which has also been accompanied by larger-than-normal pay increases for state employees across Michigan, according to the Freep. Whitmer says that is to offset the effects of inflation in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The average salary for state classified employees, not including benefits, reached $72,821 in 2023, according to the Detroit Free Press report. That is up 14% since 2020. The state has about 46,677 employees. according to the latest data.
