GANGES TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO-WHTC) – The body of a man washed up on the Lake Michigan shoreline north of South Haven, with authorities treating it as a suspicious death, has now been identified.
Deputies from Allegan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched Wednesday, Feb. 13 around 8:20 a.m. to the 2200 block of Lakeshore Drive after a homeowner saw what they believed was a human body on the beach.
When deputies arrived they found the man, who was unclothed aside from a pair of size 12 brown leather Converse All Star shoes. They say the body appeared to have been in the water for some time prior to washing ashore overnight.
Due to the time spent in the water, identification was not immediately made, but on Tuesday, Feb. 20, dental records indicated that the body was that of Elijah Ramone Looper a 21-year-old man who was reported as missing on November 21, 2023 from Chicago.
“At this time, the Allegan County Sheriffs Office has not received the medical examiners report regarding cause of death. However foul play is not suspected.” – Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Brown.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Michigan State Police and the Saugatuck Fire Department.
