BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 29-year-old Texas man is dead after a shooting that involved Battle Creek Police officers downtown Thursday afternoon.
Police were called to Café Rica at 62 East Michigan Avenue at 3:42 p.m. for a report of an unwanted person.
Battle Creek Police say several officers responded to the call. During the response, a female police officer received a gunshot wound to the leg during a physical altercation with the suspect.
She was taken to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and is expected to recover.
Another officer responding to the call shot the suspect and stopped the altercation. The man received medical treatment at the scene, and was pronounced dead from his injuries.
According to a press release from the City of Battle Creek, Michigan State Police and the Battle Creek Crime Lab will assist with the investigation.
The officer who shot the suspect will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
More information on the shooting is expected at a press conference Friday.
